Cambridge International IGCSE English (First Language) (0500 & 0990) is designed for learners whose first language is English. The course develops the ability to communicate clearly, accurately and effectively through reading, writing, speaking and listening.

Learners study a wide range of fiction and non-fiction texts, developing their skills in comprehension, analysis, evaluation and interpretation. They also learn to write for different audiences, purposes and formats, using accurate grammar, punctuation and vocabulary while developing their own personal writing style.

This qualification encourages critical thinking, effective communication and independent analysis, providing an excellent foundation for further study, including Cambridge International AS & A Level English, as well as higher education and a wide range of future careers. The 0500 and 0990 syllabuses cover the same content and assessments, with the main difference being the grading scale used in different administrative zones.
