Cambridge International IGCSE Computer Science (0478 & 0984) develops learners’ understanding of computational thinking and the principles of solving problems using computers. Students learn how computer systems work, how data is represented and processed, and how technology is used safely and effectively in the modern world.
The course covers topics including computer systems, hardware and software, data representation, networks, cybersecurity, algorithms, programming, databases and Boolean logic. Learners also develop the skills to design, write, test and evaluate computer programs using algorithms and a high-level programming language, preparing them for real-world computing challenges.
This qualification provides an excellent foundation for further study, including Cambridge International AS & A Level Computer Science, while developing logical thinking, analytical skills and problem-solving abilities that are highly valued in higher education and future careers. The 0478 and 0984 syllabuses cover the same content and assessments, with the main difference being the grading scale used in different administrative zones. Since 2023, the course no longer includes pre-release material, instead using an unseen scenario-based programming question in Paper 2.
